The Scientific Library of the Polytechnical Museum
The Scientific Library became the first step on the way to the foundation of the All-Russian Scientific and Educational
Center. Its foundation in 1864 was initiated by the members of the Imperial Society of the amateurs of natural sciences, anthropology and ethnography with Professor G.E.Schurovsky (Moscow University) at the head. The aims of the library were the propagation of knowledge, collecting and holding literature.
The Scientific Library and the Polytechnical Museum were planned as a single complex which would combine scientific, educational and cultural activities. For the space of 140 years of its activities the Scientific Library has become one of the largest book depositories in Russia. There are almost 3,5 million copies of books and periodicals in Russian and foreign languages, technical documents. The library stocks include literature on technical and natural sciences, ecology, economics, industry, building and architecture, applied arts, museum science etc. There are many works by well-known Russian and foreign scientists such as G.Leibniz, A.Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, I.Newton, M.Lomonosov, D.I.Mendeleev, N.I.Lobachevsky, I.P.Pavlov, S.I.Vavilov and others.
The library owns a substantial collection of rare and valuable editions of the 16th-18th centuries. Some periodicals in the library stocks are of great interest. The magazines "Mining Magazine", "Sea Journal", "Nature", "Electricity" are represented for the whole period of their existence. TheScientific Library publishes the science retrospective bibliography index "History of Technology".
