Round the Museum Hall
In 65 halls of the Museum many thousand of exhibits are displayed, representing practically all the spheres of scientific and technical progress: «Mining», Metallurgy», «Chemical technologies», «Transport», «Power engineering», «Optics», «Automation and Computers», «Radio-electronics & Communication», «Cosmonautics», The list of .sections is far from being complete, that one could see, making the own choice of the route according to taste and judgement.
«Museum in the Museum» - the Hall, devoted to history of the Polytechnical. Here is the story of its bright, dramatic, from time to time, full of interesting events activity. The display «Transport» occupies 9 halls of the ground floor of the Museum. Here are the most representative shares of collections of motor-cars, bicycles, motorcycles; each of them is considered to be the largest in the state museum rarity fund of the country. One of the sections of the «Mining» display is devoted to survey and mining of minerals, whilst the operating dioramas show various technique and equipment of surveying.
The hall, showing the machinery and technology of solid mineral resources' mining, produce a great impression on visitors. The operating mock-ups of a colliery and a mine, an advanced open-cut (stripping) colliery give an idea of the underground and open-cast methods of mining. The working models of walking and wheel excavators, various coal miners (cutter-loader, coal sharer, etc.) and other heading machines are of particular interest.
The dioramas and operating mock-ups - the peculiarity of the Polytechnical
Museum.
Excursus through the pages of the history of chemistry one can make in the halls of the Museum.
B. S. Yakobi's galvanic-plastics. Mendeleev's periodic law. V. N. Ipatiev's works in the field of catalysis and organic synthesis.
V. Ñ. Shukhov's cracking process, S. V. Lebedev's industrial method of rubber making only a small share of contribution, made by the Russian chemists to the valuable fund of modern civilization.
In the hall, devoted to metallurgy, by means of a unique operating mock-up of a blast furnace shop, one can get acquainted with (he process of iron easting - beginning with the raw feed to hot metal (iron) tapping. Proceeding the tour through the suit of halls of the Polytechnical Museum, we shall go to the halls of radio-electronics and radio-communication. It is, indeed, the work! of surprising transformations! Starting from the world's first radio-set of A. S. Popov to devices of space communications, P. L. Shilling's telegraph apparatus - to Ihe up-to-date fast-acting telegraph printers.
The display «Power engineering» helps to learn the main stages of development the technology of power generation, conversion and transmission of current.
In the «Heat engineering» ball the steam-powered machines, designed by I. I. Popov and J. White are demonstrated by the similar operating mock-ups.
One of (he Museum halls tells the visitors about the various light sources, as well as their history. Over 500 museum pieces of (he unique collection assist in the story. The ring of the displays is completed by the section «Optics». Here is the only one in Russia and one of the world's largest collection of microscopes.
One of the major Russian collections of photo-cameras represent the history of a photo-camera.
The second floor (am.-third) displays are waiting for you.
Examination of the display begins with the section, devoted to cosmonautics, where are many original objects and mock-ups of spaceships, as well as documentary photographs, which demonstrate a true picture of the national space technology development. The computer department is one of those, that, certainly, attracts everybody's attention. The simplest devices for counting and the up-to-date/advanced computers represent the history of their progress. One should stay for some lime in the hall «Time measuring mechanisms - clock & watch». The display tells much about time and hours' measuring technique - starting with the first solar clock-up to modern electronic, atomic watch and even the systems of universal time.
In the halls of the Polytechnical Museum is possible to see many things, to learn, understand and open to himself a great deal and come here again many times.
